New York State Vs England – How Do They Compare?

New York State Vs England - How Do They Compare?

Created by reddit user eivarXlithuania

The mapographic above compares New York State and England (note not the full UK). While the two are almost the same size geographically, their population and economies are quite different.

Here’s how they stack up with slightly more exact numbers:

 New YorkEngland
Area54,555 sq mi (141,300 km2)50,301 sq mi (130,279 km2)
Population19,795,79154,786,300
GDP (nominal)$1.44 trillion USD$2.340 trillion USD
GDP per capita$72,742$42,711

So while England’s population and economy are both larger than New York state’s, New Yorker’s are on average significantly wealthier. However, the difference can at least be partly explained by the relative importance of the key city for each area.

New York City has a population of 8,550,405 people or around 42.3% of the entire state’s population. London is slightly bigger with 8,673,713 people, but this only represents 15.8% of England’s entire population.

So there you have it. Now, which would you prefer to live in? Leave a comment below:

I lived in London for two years, many years before moving to NYC, and I love both cities as well as England & NY state~! In fact, I think there’s no other city I’d rather live in (with the possible exception of Berlin) than London if I were not living in NYC; but ultimately, NYC is home now. I think there are a lot of similarities between NYS & England, but of course the difference is that England is most of the island of Britain, while NYS is part of a much larger country that takes up nearly half a continent. The other big difference is that NYC is part of a metropolitan area that includes the SW corner of Connecticut & the northern half of New Jersey; to that extent, NYS is an extremely artificial creation, since NYC has little to do with upstate NY except insofar as NYC taxpayers subsidize upstate NY and are in turn subject to being overruled by legislators from upstate and Long Island.

You better get your facts straight before opening your mouth. The fact is that the entire state puts much more money into NYC then the reverse. I wish NYC would become their own state, then the rest of the country would support their economy.

You are correct. NYC is more of a burden on the rest of the state.

Pauline is correct. NYC pays more in taxes then it gets back. I am from upstate and I have heard for years that upstate taxes get dumped into downstate and it is just not true. Here is a good link backing that up. http://www.politifact.com/new-york/statements/2016/oct/14/chris-jacobs/state-spends-more-western-new-york-it-receives-tax/

New York and England are a lot alike in a lot of ways! New York is like England in a lot of ways. I think that Broadway is the Theatre District in London of the United States. Just as people from London go to the countryside from the city from their jobs to get away from life to places like Essex, and Salisbury, people in New York City go to places in Upstate New York like Danbury, and Brewster to get away as both of which are very rural. Also, It is safe to say that New York and London and are both port cities that are iconic and they both sit on the Atlantic Ocean. they also have beaches both of which have coast lines that are similar and also a lot of people who want to come to the United States from England come to New York for a change of life. There is certainly a lot of European influence in New York, as well.
